How to Identify a Hazardous Tree Before a Hurricane in Wilmington, NC
Every June, Wilmington homeowners start looking up. And they should — the Cape Fear coast has taken direct or glancing hits from Florence, Isaias, Matthew, and Dorian in recent memory. The trees that come down in those storms almost always show warning signs weeks or months in advance. Here's how to spot them before the wind arrives.
1. Check the lean
A tree that has always leaned isn't necessarily dangerous. But a lean that has developed or worsened — especially after a storm — is a red flag. Look at the base: is the ground on one side beginning to lift or crack? Are there fresh exposed roots on the opposite side of the lean? A sudden lean means the root plate is failing. Call a local tree pro right away for an on-site look.
2. Inspect the trunk for cracks and cavities
Walk the full circumference of every large tree within striking distance of your house. Look for vertical cracks, seams, or bulges — these can indicate internal decay. A small cavity where a branch broke off long ago is usually fine. A trunk-length split, a hollow you can put your hand into, or soft, punky wood at the base means the tree may not survive the next storm's wind load.
3. Look for dead limbs and dieback
In mid-summer, healthy trees have full canopies. Bare branches, sparse leaves, or an entire dead section in the crown ("dieback") tell you the tree is in decline. Dead limbs are the single most common cause of storm damage — they snap first, fall through roofs, take out power lines, and injure people. Even on a healthy tree, deadwood should be pruned annually before June 1.
4. Watch for root heave and soil movement
Wilmington's sandy coastal soil holds water — and in a hurricane, saturated soil loses its grip on tree roots. Look at the ground within a 10-foot radius of every large tree. Is there a small mound on one side and a depression on the other? That's early root plate failure. It's often invisible until the storm arrives.
5. Identify fungal growth at the base
Mushrooms, shelf fungi (conks), or oyster-like growths on the trunk or at the root flare are a serious sign of internal decay. By the time fungi are fruiting on the outside, decay is well established inside. A quick on-site look can tell you whether the tree is still structurally sound or needs to come down.
6. Know your species risk
Not all trees fail equally in hurricanes. In the Wilmington area:
- Loblolly and longleaf pines: Tall, shallow-rooted, and prone to snapping or uprooting in saturated soil. The most common storm-damage species locally.
- Live oaks: Generally very wind-tolerant when healthy and well-pruned — but heavy, low limbs can break off catastrophically.
- Water oaks and laurel oaks: Weak-wooded, decay-prone, and often the "surprise" failures in storms.
- Bradford pears: Notorious for splitting at the crotch in any strong wind.
- Palms: Very wind-tolerant, but heavy fronds and seed pods should be removed pre-storm.
7. Assess proximity to your house and power lines
Even a healthy tree can become a hazard if it's tall enough to fall on your house. Measure roughly: is the tree taller than the distance from its trunk to your roof? If yes, and any of the above warning signs are present, treat it as a priority.
